How many exotic, uncommon, and aquatic hobbies can one man have? In Bruce Tulio’s case, the answer is more than one. We’ve already mentioned his great love of scuba diving, something that isn’t really a hobby so much as a passion. Indeed, not only is he a former participant in the sport, but Bruce Tulio is also a former spokesperson for a diving instruction organization. Obviously, it’s something he loves, and something that he takes seriously. But it isn’t the only sport he gets excited about.
On the contrary, Bruce Tulio is a man who enjoys devoting his leisure time to a variety of pursuits, and one of his major interests is sailing. And we’re not just talking about a leisurely afternoon on the lake, either; no, Bruce Tulio, a man who devotes himself vigorously to every activity he engages in, is a former participant in various competitive sailing events, most notably the Newport Bermuda Race.
If you’re not familiar with this exciting event—truly one of the foremost competitions in the sailing world—here are a few quick facts:
- The Newport Bermuda Race is a 635-mile race on the ocean, largely out of sight of land; it usually lasts three to six days. It crosses a stretch of the Atlantic Ocean known for challenging weather, especially in the Gulf Stream, where there are strong currents and various hazards that keep the sailors ever on their toes.
- The race is held every two years; it is conducted in June, and there are usually more than 180 boats in competition.
- In 2006, 90 % of the boats had amateur crews comprised of friends and family members, all in keeping with a century-long tradition of sportsmanship and family-friendliness.
This is an event that is near and dear to Bruce Tulio’s heart, and though he is no longer a regular competitor, he still follows the proceedings with great interest. It’s another example of just how rich his sense of curiosity is, and how passionate he becomes about the things that truly interest him!
